Respected Widow.
The "ligira" or hat belonged to this woman's late husband and indicates his high standing in the community. She would have enjoyed many privileges because of his importance, such as not paying for her vegetables at the market. Pipe smoking was traditional among older women and Joy found it "an amusing sight to watch an old crone filling the bowl of her clay pipe, which is set at the end of a thin reed some three feet long".
